Read: James 4:4-6

James says when we live selfishly, we turn our backs on God's value and we betray our commitment to live as God's friend and disciples. He does not mince words here: he calls it adultery - we turn our backs on God and cozy up to the values of some other god.

To live self-centredly, to disregard the well being of others in our decisions in an act of betrayal.

James says God is longing for us to live out the life he designed for us, the life of blessing in relationships. Like parent, he will train a rebellious child, and bless a humble and teachable one.

Write
Think about your faith story: how have you experienced God's training and blessing as his child?

Presently, in what situations are you tempted to ignore God and do something selfish? How does it feel to think of this as betrayal of trust?

In what area of your life are you struggling to stay open and teachable to God?

Pray
What is God saying to you today?

Talk to God about your experience with failing to live up to your commitment to him. Tell him how you feel about calling it betrayal of trust.

Talk to God about your current struggles to stay true to living God's way. Tell him about the conflicts your feel between doling what is good for you and doing what is good for others.

Ask God for the wisdom to stay open and teachable.

Pray for an experience of God's love, grace and mercy as the Spirit shows you how to live the unselfish life God designed for you to live, and frees you to love others more generously.
