Read: Exodus 23:1-9

Having outlined the 10 core values of Jewish society - values about respect of God, respect of self, and respect of neighbours' life and possession, Moses now enters a discussion of what these values look like in society when they are lived out.

Today's passage continues with a discussion on personal integrity and reputation.  From the discussion, we can see that there is no wild west justice in Hebrew society.  Instead, it is a community governed by truth.

First, Moses does not allow "organized" gossip - the ganging up of  people and coordinate lies to do someone in.  Second, the wealthy is to have no "court" advantage over the poor.  Third, strangers are to be given the same fair shake.

And somewhere in there is an instruction to return stray animals, even if it belongs to an enemy.  The fights between people don't change the truth of animal ownership.

Think about your faith story: what does reputation mean to you?  Have you ever damaged someone's reputation unfairly?  Has anyone damaged your reputation unfairly?

In your life presently, what is the state of your reputation?  What would your co-worker say about you?  What would a waitress?

In your life presently, who is an enemy? What are some inaccurate things you are tempted to say about them?

Pray
What is God saying to you today? What's Good News to you?

Talk to God about reputation - yours, and those whose reputation you have hurt.  Thank God for the way he gives you Jesus' perfect reputation, and keeps it perfect in spute of your failures.

Pray about your present state of reputation.  Ask God for he wisdom and support to repair the relationship with those who say bad things about you.

Pray for the people you are angry at. Ask God for the wisdom and support to repair these relationships.

Pray for an experience of God's love, grace and mercy in the way he lends you his reputation, and the way he teaches you to protect others' reputation.
