Having outlined the 10 core values of Jewish society - values about respect of God, respect of self, and respect of neighbours' life and possession, Moses now enters a discussion of what these values look like in society when they are lived out.
Today's passage continues with a discussion on kindness and generosity to God, to God appointed leaders, and to ourselves.
First, Moses says they are not to curse God or those in leadership. The dicionary defines "cursing" as "wish misfortune on someone." In a world where God is in control, I doubt that our cursing of anyone is that effective. It would seem that when we curse, somehow, we do more damage to ourselves, to that relationship, than to the person we curse. Perhaps what Moses is telling us, is to tend with care to our relationship with God and leaders.
Second, Moses says they are to be timely with their offerings to God - whether it is crop, or firstborns. Now, the Hebrews are one of the first cultures to outlaw human sacrifices. So Moses is not talking about the actual offering of children to God. Rather, he is talking about the rituals associated with expressing gratitude to God. "GIve to God in a timely manner."
Finally, Moses tell the Hebrews to live with dignity, like God, and not like animals. The example given is to abstain from eating "road kill". Certainly, the intent of this instruction maybe food safety. But it's a mystery why they would eat road kill when God supplies them with fresh bread and meat. Why would they choose something on the side of the road, over what God provides? Moses says, "don't. That's beneath you as God's people."

Think about your faith story: how well do you treat God, God's leaders, and yourself with respect and dignity?
In your life presently, are you at odds with God and those God has chosen to lead you? Are you giving to God the offerings due him, promptly? Are you content with what God provides for you, or are you looking hungrily at what is off limits?
In your life presently, who do you know is struggling to honour God, God's leaders, and themselves?
