It was another memorable, powerful miracle.
The Hebrews with their backs against a mountain and a sea, God tells Moses to stick his staff into the water. Miraculously, a path opens up for the Hebrews to walk through. When the Egyptian army tries to follow, some of them are swallowed up into the sea. The surviving Egyptians declare that "God is fighting on their side", and conclude it'd be a good idea to turn around and cut their losses.
The lesson: the impossible is possible when God is on our side.
But we must not miss WHOSE side God goes on. He does not side with those with power. God is the kind of God that comes alongside the underdog - those without power. And he uses his power to over-power those who misuse their power to oppress others.
The Hebrews are impressed. Certainly at the force of the sea crashing over their oppressors. But they are also impressed that God would care for them - people who have been told all their lives that they were good for nothing except to make bricks. There is nothing about them that God should care for them. And yet there they are - God with them standing on the other side of the sea, the other side of their enemies.
They are free.
