It's funny if you think about it - Moses and Aaron, two men in their eighties preparing to go head to head with all the hoopla of the Egyptian Pharaoh.
God really does nothing easy. Instead of one talented "leader", God puts two mediocre beings together into a team. Moses insists he stutters, but somehow he has a sensitivity to hear God. Aaron can't hear God as Moses does, but boy, he can put a sentence together. So God tells Moses, Moses tells Aaron, Aaron speaks.
And there will be signs - demonstrations that God is God, and he is superior to anything the Egyptians worship.
So for starters, God tells Aaron through Moses to throw down his staff so God can turn it into a snake. And to ramp up the drama, God also allows the Egyptian magician to do the same - so God's snake can eat up theirs.
A snake is an Egyptian symbol of kingship. God is letting the Pharaoh know that he is dealing with a king. But Pharaoh is not impressed.
